SURGERY

Castrations

Castration is usually performed as a yearling. It is possible in older and younger animals, but both testes must have descended and castration in older horses carries greater risk of complications. The majority of our castrations are performed under general anaesthetic at the client’s premises. They can be performed at any time of year, but typically Spring and Autumn are recommended to avoid flies.

Laser Surgery

Our in-house laser allows us to perform removal of common skin tumours such as sarcoids and melanomas. This is typically performed under standing sedation and local anaesthetic at the clinic. Removal of these masses via laser has the advantage of reduced haemorrhage and helps to prevent the seeding of tumour cells during the removal process, reducing the likelihood of recurrence compared to other techniques.

Dentistry Referrals

We regularly host clinics by the Equine Dental Clinic (‘EDC’), meaning we have access to specialist care, diagnostics and treatment for all aspects of dentistry and conditions affecting the equine head.
