2024 VETERINARY INTERNSHIP – JOB DESCRIPTION

Our internship programme is designed for enthusiastic qualified veterinary graduates who wish to gain experience in all aspects of equine general practice within a supportive independent equine clinic. Our internship programme typically lasts 24 months, and veterinary interns must hold a veterinary degree that is registerable with the RCVS.

VT Vets is situated in the heart of Oxfordshire and has a strong sports horse lameness and breeding bias. Due to a high percentage of our work being ambulatory, all of our senior vets are supported by a tech and are equipped with high spec diagnostic equipment which enables them to provide a gold standard service to our clients. We also have a clinic with stocks, stallion collection and inpatient facilities. We are team of 5 full time and 1 part time vets, who all pride themselves on providing a supportive Internship programme.

We will endeavour to teach our intern:
• All aspects of equine reproduction including the palpation and ultrasound of mares, AI (chilled and frozen), and embryo transfer
• Stallion work, stallion collection and semen processing (chilled and frozen)
• Orthopaedic examinations
• Nerve and joint blocking
• Radiograph and ultrasound examinations
• Laser surgery / standing surgical procedures
• Poor performance investigations, to include gastroscopic and endoscopic examinations
• In-patient care and a good basis of medicine cases
• How to deal with emergency scenarios
• All aspects of veterinary admin including clinical note and report writing
• Routine lab work and interpretation

As you progress through our internship programme, you will have the opportunity to do solo calls. This will provide you with the valuable experience of starting to take responsibility for individual cases whilst under the guidance and support of one of our senior veterinary surgeons.

Job details:
• Your normal days of work will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
• You will be asked when deemed ready to join the OOH’s rota. This will be supported at all times by a senior veterinary surgeon and will be 1 weekend per calendar month
